Artificial Grass Cost Per Square Metre

Per square metre is how the trade quotes and how homeowners compare, but the rate is not flat. The same grass in the same town can be forty pounds a metre apart depending on dig depth, access and how many cuts the shape forces.

The figures below are the bands we actually work to in Essex, not a national average scraped from a directory.

Supply only, mid range turf
£18 to £45 per m2
Supplied and fitted, typical
£55 to £110 per m2
Small lawn under 25m2
Rate rises, fixed costs spread thinner
Large lawn over 100m2
Rate falls, machine dig becomes viable

Why small lawns cost more per metre

Every job carries fixed costs that do not shrink with the lawn: getting a crew and a van to site, hiring a whacker plate, ordering a skip, buying a part load of aggregate you cannot split. On a 15m2 front garden those fixed costs are spread over very few metres, so the rate looks high. On 120m2 the same costs almost disappear into the total.

If you are comparing a quote for a courtyard against a neighbour's quote for a big rear garden, the difference in rate is usually arithmetic rather than anyone being overcharged.

The five things that move the rate

Turf specification sits at the top: pile height, yarn type and backing set the material cost before anyone digs. After that it is the ground.

  • Excavation depth and how much spoil has to leave site
  • Access, and whether spoil and stone are machine moved or barrowed by hand
  • Shape, because curves, trees and beds create offcuts you still pay for
  • Edging choice, from treated batten up to galvanised steel
  • Extras such as shockpad for play use or pet grade infill

Where the money actually goes

On a typical fitted job the turf itself is often only around a third of the price. Groundwork, aggregate, waste removal and labour make up the rest. That is worth knowing before you upgrade to the most expensive grass in the sample book, because a mid range turf on a properly built base beats a premium turf on a lazy one every time.

Frequently asked questions

How much is artificial grass per square metre fitted?

In Essex most fitted work lands between £55 and £110 per square metre. Straightforward rectangular lawns with good access sit at the lower end, small or awkward gardens with deep digs at the upper end.

Why is my quote higher than the price I saw advertised online?

Advertised per metre prices are almost always supply only, or fitted onto an existing base. Once excavation, aggregate, waste removal and edging are included the figure changes, which is why we itemise the sub-base on every quote.

Is it cheaper per metre if I do a bigger area?

Usually yes. Fixed costs like transport, plant hire and waste containers are spread over more metres, and beyond about 80m2 a machine dig becomes worthwhile, which cuts labour hours.

Do you charge extra for removing the old lawn?

No, it is inside the quoted price. What can change the figure is what is under the lawn. Old concrete bases and buried slabs cost more to break out than soil, so we check before pricing.

Can I save money by preparing the ground myself?

You can, and some customers do, but the guarantee then only covers the elements we install. We would rather quote the whole job and stand behind all of it for ten years.
