Cleaning and Maintaining Artificial Grass

Low maintenance does not mean no maintenance. An artificial lawn that gets twenty minutes of attention a few times a year will still look right in a decade. One that gets nothing will flatten, collect debris and go green in the shaded corners.

None of this is difficult, and none of it needs specialist kit beyond a stiff brush.

Brushing, and why direction matters

Brush against the direction of the pile with a stiff bristled broom or a power brush. This lifts fibres that traffic has laid flat and redistributes the infill sand evenly. Brushing with the pile just polishes the flattening in.

Pay extra attention to walkways, the strip by the back door and anywhere furniture sits, because those are the areas that flatten first and give the lawn a worn look.

Moss, algae and shaded corners

Shaded, damp corners under a fence line or a north facing wall can develop a green film. Rinse it off and treat with a moss killer that is safe for synthetic surfaces. Keeping leaves off in autumn prevents most of it, because it is decaying organic matter that feeds the growth.

Pets, spills and stubborn marks

Solids get picked up, then the area is rinsed. For odour, a pet safe enzyme cleaner two or three times a year is enough on a properly draining lawn. Food and drink spills come out with warm water and a mild washing up liquid. Chewing gum can be hardened with a bag of ice and lifted off. Never use bleach, white spirit or solvent based cleaners, which will damage the fibre and the backing.

Seasonal jobs worth doing

Autumn is leaves, weekly with a plastic rake or blower. Winter, leave snow to melt rather than scraping it, and never chip ice off with a shovel. Spring is the deep brush and an infill top up if walkways look thin. Summer is a rinse in hot weather to lay dust and cool the surface. Also check the perimeter edging once a year and keep barbecues, fire pits and reflected glass off the lawn, as heat is what actually damages the fibres.

Frequently asked questions

How often should artificial grass be brushed?

Every one to two months for a family lawn, more often on walkways and pet areas. Always brush against the pile direction so the fibres lift.

Can you jet wash artificial grass?

Only on a wide fan at low pressure and held well back. A close, high pressure jet blasts the infill out and can damage the stitching, which is a common cause of avoidable wear.

How do you get rid of moss on artificial grass?

Rinse, then apply a moss treatment approved for synthetic surfaces and brush the residue out. Prevention is mostly about clearing leaves and keeping the shaded areas from staying damp.

Do I need to top up the sand infill?

Occasionally. Heavy use, strong wind and over enthusiastic pressure washing all move sand around. A top up and a brush every few years restores the feel and keeps the pile upright.

Will weeds grow through artificial grass?

Not from below with a correct membrane and sub-base. Airborne seed can occasionally root in debris sitting in the pile, which is another reason to keep the surface brushed and leaf free.
