Artificial Grass for Dogs and Pets
Dog owners are the single biggest group we install for. The appeal is obvious once you have lost a lawn to a labrador: no mud tracked through the kitchen, no bare patches, no winter quagmire by the back door.
Pet use does change the specification though, and any installer who tells you it makes no difference has not gone back to enough jobs three years later.

Urine, drainage and the smell question
Liquid passes straight through a permeable backing and into the aggregate below, so it does not sit on the surface the way it does on soil. Smell comes from ammonia in solids left in the pile and from urine held in a base that cannot drain. Solve drainage and you have solved most of it.
We specify a fully permeable backing, keep the blinding layer open rather than sealed, and use a zeolite infill that traps ammonia until it is rinsed out. A hose down every few weeks in summer does the rest. We would rather tell you that plainly than pretend a dog garden maintains itself.
Digging, chewing and claws
Dogs test edges, not the middle. That is why pet installs get a fixed timber or steel restraint with the grass turned down and secured into it, rather than loose edges pinned with U pins that a determined terrier can lift in an afternoon.
Claws also matter. A short dense pile recovers from repeated running and turning far better than a long soft one, which is why we steer pet owners away from the tallest piles in the sample book even though they look best in the showroom.

- Proper sub-base preparation
- Suitable for pets and low-maintenance gardens
Puppies, older dogs and multi dog households
A puppy garden and a senior dog garden are different jobs. Puppies need dig resistant edges and forgiving cushioning; older dogs need grip and a level surface with no trip lips. Multi dog households need more rinse capacity and often a small stone or resin toilet zone at one end so the lawn is not doing all the work.

Is artificial grass OK for dogs?
Yes, artificial grass for dogs works well when it is built to drain. Urine must pass straight through the turf and base, so a permeable backing and a free-draining sub-base matter more than pile height. Solid waste is picked up as on a normal lawn, then the area is rinsed.
Dogs that dig or run the same route along a fence line put more stress on edges and joins. Secure edging and well-fixed seams stop paws lifting the turf, and a denser pile copes better with repeated wear.
Keeping a dog lawn fresh
Rinse the favoured toilet spot regularly, especially in warm weather, and brush the pile now and then to keep it upright. A pet-safe turf cleaner can help with smells in a busy garden.
On hot days synthetic turf warms up in direct sun. Leave some shade or a cooler patio area where dogs can lie, and give the lawn a quick rinse to cool it when needed.
Your questions answered
Is artificial grass OK for dogs?
Yes, if it drains well. A permeable turf backing and a free-draining base let urine pass through rather than sit on the surface.
Will my dog dig up artificial grass?
Secure edging and well-fixed joins make it hard for paws to lift the turf, even along favourite fence-line runs.
Does artificial grass get hot for dogs?
It can warm in strong sun. Provide shade and rinse the surface on hot days to cool it.
Frequently asked questions
Does artificial grass smell if you have dogs?
Not if the backing is fully permeable, the base drains and solids are picked up as you would on a real lawn. Odour problems almost always trace back to a sealed base or non permeable backing rather than the grass itself.
Will my dog dig it up?
The middle of a properly fixed lawn is not diggable. Edges are the weak point, so pet installations get a fixed perimeter restraint with the grass secured into it rather than pinned loosely.
What is the best pile height for dogs?
Between 25mm and 32mm with a dense stitch rate. It stands back up after heavy use, does not flatten into runs, and it is easier to brush and rinse than a long soft pile.
How do I clean up after my dog on artificial grass?
Pick up solids as normal, then rinse the area with a hose. In summer a monthly rinse across the whole lawn keeps things fresh, and a pet safe enzyme wash a couple of times a year deals with the rest.
Is it safe if my dog eats grass or chews it?
The fibres are non toxic, but no lawn is a chew toy. If you have a persistent chewer we would talk through infill choice and edge detailing before installing.
