A tired driveway is rarely a broken one. Years of moss, algae, weeds and traffic grime sit on the surface and in the joints, and no amount of scrubbing with a brush shifts it. A professional pressure wash strips that layer off and shows the surface underneath, which on most Essex drives and patios is in far better condition than the dirt suggested.

Why we do not just blast everything

Held too close or on a narrow jet, a pressure washer does real damage. It scours stripes into slabs, lifts the colour out of block paving and blows the jointing sand straight out of block paved driveways, which is what leaves the blocks rocking a few months later. Resin is even less forgiving: a close zero degree jet can strip the resin coating off the aggregate for good.

So we match the method to the surface. Block paving gets a rotary surface cleaner and a fresh application of kiln dried sand once the joints are dry. Resin gets a wide fan at low pressure, held well back, with stubborn moss cleared by hand first. Tarmac gets the gentlest treatment of all, because aggressive washing lifts the fines out of the surface.

If a surface is beyond cleaning, we will say so. A driveway that has lost its colour to UV or slabs that have been scoured by a previous jet wash will not come back with a wash, and we would rather tell you that on the site visit than sell you a clean that changes nothing. Where a repair or a relay is the honest answer, that is a conversation about our patio and landscaping or block paving services instead.

Patio cleaning cost and when repairs come first

Patio cleaning cost depends on the area, paving material, access and condition of the surface. Heavy organic growth, awkward edges and joints needing care can change the work involved. Comparing only the size of two patios may therefore miss important differences in the cleaning required.

Before booking, describe loose slabs, cracked paving or gaps where pointing has fallen away. Cleaning removes surface dirt and growth; it does not rebuild a failed base, correct a dip or secure a rocking slab. A cleaner appearance should not be mistaken for a repaired patio. Fragile joints may also need attention before a suitable washing method can be agreed.

Ask what cleaning and any joint treatment include, and keep repair work clearly identified rather than assuming it is part of washing. Where the patio is sound but discoloured, cleaning may be the appropriate starting point. Where movement or persistent pooling is present, discuss the underlying problem before deciding on the finish.

Will patio cleaning fix uneven slabs?

No. Washing cannot correct levels or restore support beneath a slab. Uneven or moving paving needs assessment as a repair issue.

Why can similar-sized patios have different cleaning quotes?

Material, growth, access and joint condition affect the work. Compare what each quote includes rather than assuming area alone determines the price.

Will pressure washing damage my block paving?

Not when it is done properly. The risk comes from holding the lance too close or using a narrow jet, which can scour the surface and blast the jointing sand out. We use a rotary surface cleaner at sensible pressure, then re-sand the joints afterwards so the driveway is left locked and stable, not loose.

Can you pressure wash a resin bound driveway?

Yes, but it needs a gentler touch than block paving. Resin bound surfacing should be washed with a wide fan at low pressure from a distance, because a close zero degree jet can strip the resin from the aggregate. We also clear any moss or algae by hand first where it has taken hold.

How often should a driveway or patio be professionally cleaned?

Most Essex driveways and patios benefit from a proper clean every two to three years. Shaded, north facing areas and surfaces under trees usually need attention sooner because moss and algae come back faster there.

Do you re-sand block paving after washing it?

Yes. Washing always moves some of the jointing sand, so for block paved driveways we brush in fresh kiln dried sand once the surface has dried and the joints are refilled. Skipping this step is what leaves blocks rocking a few months later.
