Paving marked or loosened after jet washing

Pressure Washer Damage to Paving: Repairing Scoured Slabs and Blown Joints

A pressure washer is a genuinely useful tool on hard landscaping and a genuinely destructive one, and the difference is entirely in the nozzle, the distance and the angle. Most of the damage we are called to look at was done in an hour by someone trying to do the right thing.

Some of it is cosmetic and weathers out. Some of it, particularly on soft stone and resin, is permanent. Knowing which is which stops people making it worse by washing harder.

The damage a jet wash actually does

Striping and lap marks come from an inconsistent height and speed, so some strips of the surface have been eroded more than others. On concrete slabs and blocks this shows as a lighter, rougher band.

Pitting and exposed aggregate happen when a narrow nozzle is held close enough to erode the cement paste at the surface. The slab is left rough, holds dirt faster and looks permanently lighter.

Scouring on soft natural stone is the worst case. Sandstone and limestone can be cut visibly by a turbo nozzle, leaving gouges that no cleaning will remove.

Blown joints are the most common and most consequential. Jointing sand and older pointing wash out easily, and paving with empty joints loses its interlock, lets water into the bed and starts to move and weed up. On resin bound surfacing a close jet strips aggregate out of the binder and leaves a bald patch.

What can be put right

Empty joints are fully repairable and should be dealt with promptly. On block paving, let everything dry, then brush in kiln dried sand or a polymeric compound and vibrate or compact it down until the joints are full to within a couple of millimetres of the surface.

On slabs, rake out what is left of the failed pointing rather than trying to patch over it, and re-point with a proper jointing mortar suited to the slab type and joint width. Skimming new material over loose old pointing simply fails again.

Light striping on concrete products usually evens out over a year or so as the whole surface weathers to match. It looks worse in the first months than it will in the end.

What cannot be undone

Gouging in soft stone, heavy exposed aggregate on concrete and bald patches in resin bound surfacing are permanent. The affected units can be lifted and replaced, and resin can be patched, though a resin repair rarely disappears completely because the new material weathers differently.

If damage is limited to a small area, replacing individual slabs or blocks is usually the tidiest answer. Where a whole patio has been scoured, it becomes a judgement call between living with it, sealing it to even the appearance out, or relaying.

Cleaning without doing it again

Treat first and wash second. A moss and algae treatment left the full time does most of the work chemically, so you need far less pressure afterwards.

Use a wide fan nozzle, never a turbo or pencil jet, on hard landscaping. Keep the lance at least 30cm back, hold a consistent shallow angle and move in steady overlapping passes across whole slabs. A rotary patio cleaner attachment is safer than a lance because it fixes the height and distance for you.

Then re-sand or re-point as a matter of course, not as an afterthought. If you would rather not risk it, we clean, re-sand, re-point and relay paving across Essex, and our installation work carries a ten year guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

I have washed the sand out of my block paving. Does it matter?

Yes. Full joints are what lock the blocks together. Leave them empty and the paving loses interlock, takes water into the bed and begins to move, so re-sand as soon as it has dried out.

Can pressure washer stripes on slabs be removed?

Light striping on concrete usually blends in as the surface weathers over a year. Deep striping that has exposed the aggregate is permanent and only replacement or relaying changes it.

Is a turbo nozzle ever safe on a patio?

We would not use one on domestic paving. It concentrates the whole output into a rotating point that cuts into soft stone and erodes concrete very quickly.

How do I repair a bald patch in resin bound surfacing?

The area is cut out and re-laid with matched aggregate and resin. It restores the surface, though the patch will usually be slightly visible because the new material weathers on a different timeline.

What pressure is safe for paving?

Rather than a number, work to technique: wide fan nozzle, lance well back, shallow angle and constant movement. A rotary patio attachment removes most of the risk because it holds distance for you.
