Block paving sealing and resealing
Block paving sealing is a surface-maintenance decision made after checking the paving, its joints and the proposed product. A sealer can change the appearance and care requirements, but it does not rebuild a failed foundation or straighten sunken blocks. Start by separating a dirty surface from a construction defect.
Gardenscape’s pressure-washing page covers cleaning and re-sanding block paving joints. This page explains the additional questions involved in driveway sealing and resealing. Describe the existing paving and any previous treatment so the condition and compatibility can be considered before a coating is selected.

Look for rocking blocks, sinking tracks, loose edges and standing water. These may require investigation or repair rather than a surface finish. Coating visibly uneven paving can make it look different while leaving the cause unchanged. Identify whether the main concern is colour, cleaning, joint condition or movement.
Previous products matter too. A new coating may not be compatible with an old one, and the condition of the existing film can affect preparation. Tell us if the drive has been sealed before, even if you do not know the product name. Do not assume that a fresh application can be placed directly over every earlier treatment.
Cleaning, drying and joint preparation
Preparation should follow the chosen product’s instructions and the paving specification. Dirt, growth and contamination can affect the finish, while remaining moisture can create application problems for products that need a dry surface. Weather and drying time therefore matter alongside the area to be covered.
Block paving joints also need attention after cleaning. Joint material should suit the paving and intended treatment. Re-sanding is not the same as sealing, and a sealed surface does not remove the need for sound joints and stable edges. Establish the sequence rather than treating cleaning, sanding and coating as interchangeable tasks.
Choose the finish with wet use in mind
Some sealers alter colour or sheen more noticeably than others. Ask about the proposed appearance on your type of block, including any trial area recommended by the manufacturer. A darker or glossier finish is a visual choice, not evidence of better structural performance.
Consider slip resistance, permeability and the manufacturer’s stated use. A product suitable for one paving system is not automatically appropriate for another. Where the driveway forms part of a drainage design, check the effect of the proposed treatment on that construction. Keep the original water route and maintenance requirements in view when discussing the finish.
Resealing, timing and cost factors
Driveway resealing depends on the condition of the earlier treatment and the product instructions, not a universal calendar interval. Look at wear and compatibility before adding another coat. Excess build-up or treatment over a poorly prepared surface can create further work rather than improve the drive.
Driveway sealing cost includes more than the coating itself. Area, cleaning, contamination removal, joint preparation, earlier treatments and access all influence the scope. Compare driveway sealing companies on the specified process and compatible product rather than assuming identical work from a headline figure. Our sealing pros and cons comparison helps weigh the maintenance decision against leaving correctly maintained paving unsealed.
Your questions answered
Does sealing repair sunken block paving?
No. Sinking or movement needs its cause investigated and the affected construction addressed. A coating is not a foundation repair.
Does pressure washing include sealing?
Cleaning, joint re-sanding and sealing are distinct tasks. Check the agreed scope rather than assuming all three are included.
Can previously sealed paving be resealed?
The old treatment, its condition and compatibility with the proposed product must be checked first.
How is driveway sealing cost worked out?
The area and preparation determine much of the work, including cleaning, joints and any earlier coating. Compare the full process rather than product cost alone.
