Resin bound patio installation
A resin bound patio offers a continuous aggregate finish for a seating area, courtyard or garden terrace. Gardenscape provides resin bound surfacing for patios as well as paths and driveways across Essex. For a patio, the emphasis is on how the space feels underfoot and connects with the house, borders and garden routes.
This is resin bound surfacing: aggregate is mixed with resin before laying. It is not resin bonded surfacing, where stone is scattered onto a resin layer, and it is not a porcelain patio with resin-filled joints. If you want a resin bound outdoor area, start by discussing its layout, supporting base and drainage.

Choose the aggregate finish for your space
Aggregate blends influence the overall colour and texture of the patio. Compare samples beside existing brickwork, doors and garden features rather than choosing from a small screen image alone. A broad terrace can look different from a sample, and the surrounding planting will also change how the colour reads.
Think about chairs, table legs and the routes people take around furniture. A continuous surface avoids a paving slab grid, but it still needs planned boundaries and appropriate detailing. Include the barbecue position, outdoor storage and any separate service areas when deciding the shape, rather than adding them after the perimeter is agreed.
Check the base before choosing an overlay
Resin bound surfacing follows the supporting construction; it does not stabilise a moving base or hide structural cracks indefinitely. An existing surface needs assessment for soundness, levels and compatibility before an overlay is considered. Removal and rebuilding may be more appropriate than placing a new finish over a failing patio.
For new construction, the proposed base and edging should be specified with the resin system and expected use in mind. Tell us about narrow access, buried services and any changes to the garden that could affect excavation. Preparation is a substantial part of the installation, even though the aggregate finish attracts most attention.
Understand what permeability does and does not mean
Resin bound surfacing can allow water through its open structure, but the complete build-up determines where that water goes. A permeable top layer over an impermeable base does not make the whole patio freely draining. Soil conditions, falls and the chosen drainage arrangement still need consideration.
If the garden already floods or the old patio holds water, explain when and where it happens. A resin finish is not a cure for high groundwater or an unsuitable outfall. Drainage should be addressed in the proposal, particularly beside the house, at thresholds and where the terrace meets other hard surfaces.
Detail edges, transitions and future care
A defined edge contains the surfacing and creates a clean transition to lawn or planting. Consider how the patio meets steps, drain covers and adjoining paths, and whether any covers must remain accessible. If you want a route suitable for wheels, discuss gradients and transitions as well as the surface finish.
Leaves, soil and organic debris still need removing from a resin bound patio. Cleaning should follow the installed system’s instructions, including any limits on pressure washing or chemical products. Where future alterations are likely, discuss them now: a later local repair or extension may not blend invisibly with weathered aggregate.
Your questions answered
Is resin bound the same as resin bonded?
No. Resin bound uses aggregate mixed throughout with resin, producing a different structure from resin bonded stone scattered onto a coated surface. Confirm the specified system when comparing quotations.
Can resin bound surfacing go over my current patio?
Possibly, but only if the existing construction is suitable. Loose slabs, movement, drainage issues and unsuitable finished levels can mean removal is required. A site assessment should guide that decision.
Will a resin patio stop puddles in my garden?
Not by itself. Water must have a workable route through or away from the complete construction. Ground conditions and surrounding levels can limit drainage even where the resin bound layer is permeable.
Can the same finish continue along a garden path?
A connecting resin bound path can be discussed with the patio layout. Its width, edging, gradients and supporting construction need checking, particularly where it changes level or meets existing paving.
