Resin Bound or Resin Bonded: What Is the Difference?

These two get confused constantly, including in quotes, and the difference is not cosmetic. One is a permeable trowelled surface and the other is a scattered stone finish that sheds water. Knowing which you are being sold changes the planning position, the drainage and how the drive behaves in ten years.

How each one is made

Resin bound is mixed. Dried aggregate and resin are combined in a forced action mixer so every stone is coated, then the mix is poured out and hand trowelled to a smooth, level finish. Voids between the stones remain open, which is what makes it permeable.

Resin bonded is scattered. A layer of resin is spread over the base and dry aggregate is broadcast onto it, so the stones stick to the top surface only. The result is a textured, loose looking finish with no voids running through it, because the resin layer beneath is solid.

Drainage and planning

Resin bound is permeable, so rainwater passes through into a permeable base and away. That normally satisfies the sustainable drainage rules for front gardens without needing separate drainage design or planning permission.

Resin bonded is not permeable. It behaves like a sealed surface, so water has to be managed by falls, channels and drainage, and a new impermeable front driveway above the size threshold can bring planning into play unless runoff is directed to a permeable area.

Feel, grip and appearance

Resin bound is smooth underfoot, comfortable for wheelchairs, prams, bikes and heels, and easy to sweep. Resin bonded has a rougher, sharper texture with excellent grip, which is why it turns up on slopes, ramps and some commercial paths.

Loose stone is the practical difference people notice. Resin bonded sheds some surface stone over time; resin bound does not, because the stone is locked through the depth.

Durability and repair

Resin bound is laid at depth and wears through its thickness, so it stays looking consistent for years and can be patched by a competent installer where damage occurs.

Resin bonded relies on a thin bond layer. Once that surface layer starts to release stone, re broadcasting is a resurfacing job rather than a repair.

Which to choose

For a domestic driveway, resin bound is nearly always the right answer: permeable, smooth, long lived and no loose stone. Resin bonded earns its place on steep ramps and in specific commercial situations where maximum surface grip matters more than permeability.

If a quote simply says resin, ask which one it is and check that the answer matches the drainage strategy for the drive.

Resin bound generally costs more per square metre because far more aggregate and resin go into the depth of the surface rather than a thin scattered layer.

Will resin bonded shed stones onto my path?
