Resin-Bound Driveways vs Block Paving: Which Is Right for You?
Resin-bound surfacing and block paving are the two most popular driveway finishes we install in Essex. Both look excellent and last for years when laid correctly, but they behave quite differently — so the right choice depends on how you use your drive and the look you want.
Drainage and SuDS compliance
Resin-bound surfacing is permeable, so rainwater drains straight through the surface into the ground below. That makes it naturally SuDS compliant and avoids the need for a separate drainage system or planning permission on most domestic drives.
Block paving can be permeable too, but standard blocks with a rigid sub-base may require drainage to be designed in. If surface water is a concern on your property, resin has the edge.
Maintenance and weeds
Resin gives a smooth, seamless finish with no joints for weeds to grow through, so upkeep is minimal — an occasional wash is usually all it needs. Block paving has thousands of joints, and although we use jointing sand, weeds and moss can appear over time and blocks can occasionally shift or sink.
Cost and looks
Block paving offers a huge range of colours, shapes and laying patterns and is a proven, hard-wearing choice. Resin gives a more contemporary, uniform finish and comes in a wide palette of natural aggregate colours. Costs are broadly comparable and depend on the area, sub-base and specification — we quote both so you can compare like for like.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
Permeable surfaces like resin-bound generally do not require permission. Impermeable surfaces over five square metres may, unless drainage directs water to a permeable area.
Which lasts longer?
Both last many years when installed on a correct sub-base. Resin has fewer failure points as there are no joints, while individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if ever needed.
