Resin Driveway Maintenance and Cleaning
A resin bound driveway is genuinely low upkeep because there are no joints for weeds and no blocks to sink. It is not zero upkeep, and the few jobs it does need are quick.
This is the routine we hand to customers on completion, plus the early warning signs worth knowing.
- Routine
- Sweep or blow debris, wash occasionally
- Pressure washing
- Fan nozzle, under 150 bar, 300mm back
- Weeds
- Only airborne seed on the surface, spot treat
- Winter
- Avoid rock salt, use a plastic shovel
Routine cleaning
Blow or sweep leaves and debris off regularly, particularly in autumn, because decaying organic matter is what feeds surface moss. A wash down with warm water and a stiff brush handles most of it. If you use a pressure washer, use a wide fan, keep the pressure moderate and hold the lance well back; a close zero degree jet can strip resin from the aggregate.
Weeds, moss and algae
Nothing grows up through a correctly built resin surface. What you get instead is airborne seed germinating in debris sitting on top, which lifts away with a spot weedkiller and a brush. Shaded edges and north facing sections can green up with algae; a proprietary patio cleaner suitable for resin sorts it.
Oil, fuel and stubborn marks
Deal with oil quickly. Absorb the fresh spill with cat litter or a granular absorbent, then use a resin safe degreaser rather than a solvent. Never use petrol, thinners or brake cleaner on the surface. Tyre scuffing from turning wheels on a stationary car marks any surface and generally weathers out.
Ravelling and repairs
Ravelling is loose stone coming away from the surface. A small amount of stray aggregate in the first few weeks is normal. Ongoing loss is not, and it usually points to a lay that was too thin, poor mixing or laying in the wrong conditions. Caught early, areas can be cut out and relaid seamlessly, which is exactly the sort of thing our ten year guarantee exists for.
Frequently asked questions
Can you pressure wash a resin driveway?
Yes, carefully. Use a fan nozzle, keep the pressure moderate and hold the lance around 300mm back. A close, high pressure jet can strip resin from the aggregate.
Do weeds grow through resin driveways?
Not from underneath on a correctly built base. Occasionally airborne seed roots in surface debris, which brushes and spot treats away easily.
How do I remove oil from a resin driveway?
Absorb the fresh spill with cat litter, then clean with a resin safe degreaser and warm water. Avoid solvents such as petrol or thinners, which attack the resin.
Can I use salt on it in winter?
Avoid rock salt where you can, as the grit is abrasive and can scour the surface. Clear snow with a plastic shovel rather than a metal blade.
What causes loose stones on a resin driveway?
Ravelling from a lay that was too thin, an incorrect mix ratio, or laying in damp or cold conditions. Small areas can be cut out and relaid, and our ten year guarantee covers our workmanship.
