If your existing drive is a sound, well drained concrete or tarmac slab with no significant cracking, resin can be laid over the top after preparation and priming. That is the cheaper route and it is genuine, not a shortcut, provided the base is honestly assessed.

If the base is failing, moves under load or has no drainage design, an overlay simply transfers the problem to a new surface. In that case we excavate and build a permeable base, and we will say so at the survey rather than after the deposit.

The existing surface matters too. A quote for an overlay assumes the concrete or tarmac below is stable enough to keep. A quote for a full excavation includes removing that surface and rebuilding what supports the resin. We inspect first so the written figure describes the method we actually recommend.

Access can change the labour and removal involved. A driveway that machinery can reach is different from one where material and waste must pass through a narrow route. We account for that during the site visit rather than relying on a headline square-metre rate.

A single advertised rate cannot show whether the base is sound, how water will be managed or what needs removing. Those details decide both the work and the quote, so presenting one figure before seeing the drive would be misleading.

After the survey, the quote sets out one fixed written figure for the agreed specification. That gives you something meaningful to compare and avoids treating necessary preparation as an unexpected extra later.
