Why Block Paving Sinks — And How to Fix It Properly

Sunken block paving is almost never a problem with the blocks themselves. The blocks are simply following the layer underneath them, so the dip you can see is telling you something about the sub-base, the bedding sand or the drainage below.

The right repair depends on how deep the movement goes. A localised dip near a manhole is a different job to a driveway that has settled along a wheel track.

What actually causes the sinking

The most common cause is an under-specified sub-base. A driveway that carries a car needs a compacted stone base, not just sand over soil. Where that base was skimped, wheel loads compress the ground over a few winters and the surface follows.

Other causes we find regularly: washed-out bedding sand where water tracks under an unrestrained edge, backfill settling over a service trench or soakaway, and tree roots decaying beneath the surface.

Relay or rebuild?

If the dip is isolated and the surrounding drive is solid, we lift the affected blocks, correct the base and bedding, and relay using the original blocks so the repair blends in. Keeping spare blocks from the original install makes this far tidier.

If the paving has settled across a large area or along both wheel tracks, relaying only buys time. In that case the honest answer is a proper dig-out and rebuild with a compacted MOT base, correct falls and restrained edges.

Stopping it happening again

Edge restraints matter more than most people expect — they hold the whole matrix together. We haunch edge courses in concrete so nothing can creep sideways.

Getting the falls right so surface water leaves the drive, rather than soaking into the base, is the other half of the job.

Can sunken paving be lifted without replacing the blocks?

Usually yes. Clay and concrete blocks are robust, so in most repairs we clean and reuse the existing blocks after correcting the base beneath them.

How long does a relay take?

A small localised dip is normally a day. A full driveway lift-and-relay is typically several days depending on size and access.

Will the repaired area match the rest of the drive?

Reused blocks match perfectly. If replacements are needed, weathering means new blocks look slightly fresher until they tone in.
