Driveway Drainage Problems and Standing Water
Standing water on a driveway is a design issue, not a maintenance one. Every hard surface needs somewhere for rainwater to go — either through it, or across it to a channel.
Where that was never planned, water finds the lowest point, which is often the threshold of the house or garage.

Falls, channels and thresholds
A driveway should shed water away from the building. Where the ground slopes toward the house, a linear channel drain across the threshold connected to a suitable outfall is the standard solution.
Puddling in the middle of a drive usually means the surface was laid without consistent falls, which cannot be fixed by adding gullies alone.
Permeable surfaces and planning rules
For front gardens, surfacing over five square metres should either be permeable or drain to a permeable area within the property. Resin-bound aggregate and permeable block paving both satisfy this without needing planning permission.
This matters in Essex where many front gardens sit on clay that drains slowly, so soakaway sizing has to be realistic.
Diagnosing before digging
We check where water arrives from, where it currently goes, the level of the house threshold and whether existing gullies actually connect to anything. Plenty of drives have channel drains that were never piped in.
The fix is then targeted — re-laying to correct falls, adding a channel and outfall, or converting the surface to a permeable build-up.
Frequently asked questions
Does a resin drive need drainage?
Resin-bound over a permeable base drains through the surface. Over concrete it needs designed drainage.
Do I need planning permission for a new drive?
Not if the surface is permeable or drains to a permeable area within your boundary.
Can you fix a puddle without relaying the whole drive?
Sometimes — localised re-levelling works if the rest of the drive has correct falls.
