Driveway drainage and channel drain installation
Driveway drainage is about controlling where rainwater goes once it lands on a hard surface. On a non-permeable driveway, water has to be collected and taken somewhere suitable, or it will pool in low spots, run towards the house or spill onto the pavement. A channel drain is the most common way of catching that water in a clean line across the drive.
Gardenscape has built driveways across Essex since 2007, and drainage is planned as part of the surface rather than added as an afterthought. This page covers drainage for driveways specifically. For lawns, borders and soggy gardens, our garden drainage page is the better place to start.

A channel drain, sometimes called a linear drain or driveway drainage channel, is a narrow trough set flush with the surface and topped with a grating. The driveway is laid with a gentle fall towards it, so water runs into the channel instead of across the surface. The channel then carries the water to an outlet, which may connect to a soakaway or another suitable drainage point.
Channels are often placed across the drive near the garage or front door, or along the boundary where the drive meets the road. Where the drive slopes towards the house, a channel at the bottom of the slope is usually essential.
Where the water goes
Catching water is only half the job. It has to discharge somewhere that can cope with it. Depending on the property, that might be a soakaway in the front garden, a permeable area, or a connection that is appropriate for surface water. Water should not simply be piped onto a neighbour's land or the footpath.
Rules on front gardens also play a part. Our guide to driveway planning permission explains when a new hard surface needs to be permeable or drain to a permeable area. A resin bound or gravel finish can reduce how much water needs collecting, while block paving, tarmac and concrete usually need channels or gullies planned in.
What is involved in fitting one
On an existing drive, a strip of the surface is cut out along the line of the channel and a trench is dug to the right depth. The channel units are bedded in concrete at the correct level, the outlet pipe is laid to its discharge point and the surface is reinstated up to the grating. Getting the channel slightly below the surrounding surface is what lets water flow in rather than over it.
On a new driveway, the falls, channels and outlets are set out before the surface goes down, which usually gives a neater result. If water is already pooling in the middle of an older drive, the problem may be a dip in the sub-base rather than a missing drain, and a channel alone will not fix that.
Choosing a channel
Channels come in different widths, depths and load ratings. A domestic drive used by cars needs a grating rated for vehicles, while a path only needs a lighter one. Slot drains give a slimmer look on resin or porcelain, and standard gratings suit block paving. The length of drive and the amount of water reaching it decide how big the channel needs to be.
Cost depends on the length of channel, its rating, how much surface has to be cut and reinstated, and how far the water has to be taken. We assess the falls and the outlet on a free site visit and then give one fixed written quote.
Your questions answered
Do I need a channel drain on my driveway?
If the drive is non-permeable and falls towards the house, garage or pavement, a channel drain is usually the simplest way to catch the water. A permeable surface may need less collection, but levels still need checking.
Where does the water from a channel drain go?
It is taken by pipe to a suitable discharge point, often a soakaway or permeable area within the property. It should not be directed onto a neighbour's land or the footpath.
Can a channel drain be added to an existing driveway?
Yes. A strip of the surface is cut out, the channel is bedded in concrete at the right level, the outlet is laid and the surface is made good around it.
What affects the cost of driveway drainage?
The length and load rating of the channel, how much surface needs cutting and reinstating, and how far the outlet pipe must run. We price it after a free site visit with one fixed written quote.
