Fence Prices in Essex: What a Fitted Fence Costs

A boundary is rarely a tidy multiple of 1.83 metres. There are corners, step downs on a slope, an existing wall halfway along, a tree in the line and a gate to fit. Pricing per run after measuring means the awkward bay by the manhole is already in the figure rather than appearing as an extra later.

Timber posts are cheapest and rot first, usually at ground level. Concrete posts with gravel boards cost more upfront and outlast several sets of panels, because the panel never touches wet soil. Metal post systems sit in between. On an exposed boundary or heavy clay, we will almost always recommend concrete, and we will explain why rather than just quoting the cheaper option to win the job.

Removing and disposing of the old fence, breaking out old concrete post footings, gates and their ironmongery, trellis toppers, capping rails, and any digging around services. Sloping ground adds labour because every bay is set individually rather than run level.

Taller panels use more timber, need longer posts set deeper in the ground and catch more wind, so a six foot boundary costs more per bay than a four or five foot one. Each standard panel covers roughly 1.83 metres, so the length of the boundary sets how many bays, posts and footings the job needs. A longer straight run is usually cheaper per bay than a short run with corners, steps and a gate, because set up, waste removal and awkward bays are spread across more panels.
