Diagnosing the cause

Dig a small test pit. If water sits in the hole, the issue is the ground's ability to drain. If the top few inches are dense and root-free, compaction is the immediate problem.

Moss and rushes appearing in the sward are reliable indicators of persistent wet.

Improving a natural lawn

Hollow-tine aeration with a sand top dressing, repeated over a couple of seasons, genuinely improves drainage on moderately compacted lawns. Reducing traffic in winter helps too.

Where water arrives from elsewhere — a downpipe, a neighbouring slope — intercepting it is more effective than treating the lawn.

When artificial grass makes sense

Artificial grass is installed over a compacted, free-draining stone base, which is often better drained than the clay lawn it replaces. Water passes through the backing and away.

It is the right choice for gardens that are unusable half the year — but only if the base build-up is done properly, which is exactly where cheap installs fail.
