Grass needs light. Under a mature tree or against a north-facing fence it is competing for light, water and nutrients at the same time — and it usually loses.

Repeated reseeding of the same patch rarely works because nothing about the conditions has changed.

What you can change

Crown lifting or thinning a tree lets significantly more light through and is often the single most effective intervention. Cutting the grass slightly longer in shade also helps it photosynthesise.

Shade-tolerant seed mixes containing fine fescues do better than standard hard-wearing mixes, though they are less durable underfoot.

When to stop fighting it

Dry shade under conifers or dense evergreens is close to impossible for turf. Rather than an annual reseeding cycle, a planted bed of shade-tolerant species, a bark or gravel area, or paving often looks far better.

Designing the shaded zone as a deliberate feature usually improves the whole garden.

Artificial grass performs well in shade because light is irrelevant to it, and it stays green where turf would thin out. Under trees we pay particular attention to leaf litter — a decent brush a few times a year prevents debris building on the surface.

Roots need care during excavation, so the base build-up may be adjusted to avoid damaging them.
