Deck Board Gaps, Cupping and Warping
Timber moves with moisture and composite moves with temperature. Both need designed-in allowance, and problems appear when boards are fixed as if they will stay exactly the size they were on installation day.
The pattern of movement tells you which is happening.

Timber cupping and twisting
Boards fixed while wet shrink as they dry, opening gaps. Boards laid dry and then soaked swell and can buckle. Cupping — the edges curling upward — is typically caused by one face drying faster than the other, often where under-deck ventilation is poor.
Two fixings per joist and improved airflow underneath reduce it considerably.
Composite expansion
Composite expands lengthways with heat. Manufacturers specify end gaps based on the temperature at installation, and ignoring that causes buckling in summer or wide gaps in winter.
Hidden clip fixing systems maintain consistent side gaps automatically.
What can be corrected
Individual bad boards can be swapped. Systematic gap problems usually mean re-laying the field with correct spacing and fixings.
Restoring ventilation beneath the deck often stops further movement in timber.
