To remove stains from composite decking, clean as soon as you can with warm soapy water and a soft brush, working along the grain. Grease, rust and tannin marks may need a cleaner made for composite. Avoid harsh scrubbing and very close pressure washing, which can mark the surface.

Capped versus uncapped boards

Capped composite has a polymer shell that resists staining and fading far better. Uncapped boards have exposed wood fibre at the surface, which absorbs more and weathers to a lighter tone in the first months.

That initial weathering is normal and is not a fault.

What to avoid

Wire brushes, aggressive pressure washing and solvent cleaners damage the surface and can void the manufacturer's warranty. Once the cap is scratched, staining gets much easier.

Rubber-backed mats and pots left in one place can also leave permanent marks.
