Fence Prices in Essex, Per Panel and Per Metre
Fencing is the job where quotes vary most wildly, because a panel price and a fitted run price are not remotely the same thing, and because two fences that look similar from the pavement can have completely different posts holding them up.
Below are the fitted bands we work to across Essex, and the components that decide where in the band your boundary lands.
- Lap panel, fitted
- £75 to £120 per panel
- Close board or feather edge
- £110 to £180 per panel equivalent
- Composite fencing
- £220 to £380 per panel
- Concrete posts and gravel boards
- Add £35 to £70 per bay
Why we price per run, not per panel
A boundary is rarely a tidy multiple of 1.83 metres. There are corners, step downs on a slope, an existing wall halfway along, a tree in the line and a gate to fit. Pricing per run after measuring means the awkward bay by the manhole is already in the figure rather than appearing as an extra later.
Posts are where the money quietly goes
Timber posts are cheapest and rot first, usually at ground level. Concrete posts with gravel boards cost more upfront and outlast several sets of panels, because the panel never touches wet soil. Metal post systems sit in between. On an exposed boundary or heavy clay, we will almost always recommend concrete, and we will explain why rather than just quoting the cheaper option to win the job.
What else lands on the quote
Removing and disposing of the old fence, breaking out old concrete post footings, gates and their ironmongery, trellis toppers, capping rails, and any digging around services. Sloping ground adds labour because every bay is set individually rather than run level.
- Old fence removal and waste disposal
- Breaking out existing concrete footings
- Side gate, typically £250 to £600 fitted
- Driveway or double gates, priced individually
- Trellis topper or capping rail per bay
Neighbours, boundaries and access
We check which side owns the boundary and whether we need access from next door before quoting, because a fence that can only be built from the neighbour's garden is a different job. Getting that agreed up front avoids the most common cause of a fencing job stalling halfway through.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a fence cost per panel in Essex?
Fitted, expect £75 to £120 per panel for lap, £110 to £180 for close board or feather edge, and £220 to £380 for composite. Concrete posts and gravel boards add £35 to £70 per bay.
Why do you quote per run instead of per panel?
Because real boundaries have corners, slopes, gates and obstructions. Measuring the whole run means the awkward bays are inside the fixed price rather than added later.
Are concrete posts worth the extra cost?
On most boundaries yes. The panel never sits in wet soil, so it outlasts timber posts comfortably and panels can be swapped later without digging anything out.
Do you take the old fence away?
Yes, removal and disposal are quoted as a line item, including breaking out old concrete footings where they exist.
How much is a side gate fitted?
Typically £250 to £600 depending on timber or composite, height, frame and ironmongery. Driveway gates are priced individually after measuring the opening.
