Lap panels are what most people picture as a garden fence. Closeboard is what most fencing contractors recommend when longevity is the priority.

The difference is construction, not just appearance.

How each is built

Lap panels are pre-made units of thin overlapping boards in a light frame, dropped between posts. Fast to install and the cheapest option.

Closeboard is built in place: arris rails between posts with feather-edge boards nailed on individually, plus a gravel board at the base. Considerably more material and labour.

Durability and wind

Closeboard is heavier, stiffer and copes far better with wind and impact. Damaged boards are replaced individually.

Lap panels flex, and a single damaged panel usually means replacing the whole unit. They are the ones that come out in storms.

Sloping ground

Closeboard follows a slope smoothly because it is built continuously on site — a real advantage on Essex gardens with a fall.

Panels have to be stepped down a slope, leaving triangular gaps at the base unless they are infilled.

On exposed boundaries and sloping ground, generally yes — it lasts significantly longer.

Can panels be upgraded later?

Yes, though if the posts are sound the upgrade is much cheaper.

What is a gravel board for?

It keeps the fence timber off wet ground and is replaceable, protecting the boards above.
