Gardening on Essex Clay: Drainage, Cracking and Movement
Much of south Essex sits on London clay. It is fertile and holds nutrients well, but it also swells when wet and shrinks when dry — and that movement affects everything built on it.
Designing with clay in mind is far easier than fighting it afterwards.

What clay does through the year
In winter it holds water at the surface, giving waterlogged lawns and slow-draining borders. In a dry summer it shrinks and cracks, which is why paving edges, posts and shallow foundations move seasonally.
Mature trees intensify this by drawing large volumes of water out of the ground.
Building on it
Hard surfaces need a properly compacted stone sub-base to spread load, not a thin layer over soil. Post holes need depth and drainage. Soakaways need realistic sizing because clay accepts water slowly.
Skipping the base is the single most common reason driveways and patios in this area fail early.
Improving it for planting
Bulky organic matter worked in over successive seasons genuinely improves structure. Raised beds sidestep the problem entirely for vegetables and anything that resents wet feet.
Choosing plants that tolerate heavy soil beats amending an entire garden.
