Composite Fencing: Is It Worth the Extra Cost?

Composite fencing has moved from a niche product to a mainstream option in the last few years, and we install a great deal more of it than we did. It is also considerably more expensive than timber, which makes the question a fair one: is it actually worth it?

The honest answer depends on the boundary, the exposure and how long you intend to stay. This guide sets out how composite performs, what it costs, and where timber remains the better choice.

What composite fencing actually is

Composite boards are made from wood flour or fibre bound in a polymer, usually recycled polyethylene, extruded into board profiles. The wood content gives the material its appearance and rigidity; the polymer makes it resistant to water, rot and insect attack.

Most systems use aluminium or steel posts, sometimes clad, with boards slotting horizontally between them. This is a genuinely different structure from a panel fence: the boards are captive in the post channels, which distributes wind load across the whole run rather than concentrating it at panel clips.

Board quality varies significantly. Capped composite, where the board carries a co-extruded polymer skin, resists staining and fading far better than uncapped board and is worth the difference. Solid boards are heavier and stronger than hollow ones and cost more.

Colour is through-dyed rather than applied, so scratches do not reveal a different colour underneath — though on capped board a deep scratch will show through the cap.

Cost against timber over twenty years

Up front, composite typically costs around double a good closeboard timber fence and considerably more than lap panels. That is the headline that puts people off.

Over twenty years the comparison changes. A timber fence needs treating every two to three years, which is either a weekend of work or a cost, and lap panels commonly need replacing at least once in that period. Composite needs washing.

Where a homeowner values their time, or where a boundary is difficult to access for maintenance — behind a densely planted border, or on the far side against a neighbour's garden — the maintenance saving is the real argument, not the material lifespan.

Where the property is likely to be sold within a few years, the numbers favour timber. The whole-life cost advantage only materialises if you are there to collect it.

Performance in Essex conditions

The estuary and coastal exposure across south Essex is hard on fencing. Salt air corrodes ungalvanised fixings and accelerates timber degradation, and the wind loading on solid boundaries is significant.

Composite handles both well. It does not rot, salt does not affect it, and with aluminium posts there is nothing to corrode. The captive board system is also structurally better in wind than a panel sitting in clips, which is the usual failure point.

Heat is the one caveat. Composite expands and contracts with temperature more than timber, which is why systems are designed with expansion gaps at the board ends. Installed without those gaps, boards bow in summer. This is an installation matter rather than a product fault, and it is the most common thing done wrong.

Dark composite gets noticeably hot in direct summer sun, which is worth knowing if the fence runs alongside a seating area or if children play against it.

The drawbacks worth knowing

It does not look like timber up close. From a few metres it is convincing; at arm's length the extruded grain pattern is visibly repetitive. On a period property, good hardwood or well-maintained closeboard looks better.

It fades. Manufacturers are honest about an initial weathering period in the first few months where the colour lightens and settles. Capped boards fade far less thereafter, but no exterior material is entirely colour-stable.

It cannot be easily repaired or refinished. A damaged timber board is replaced for a few pounds and stained to match. A damaged composite board is a proprietary component, and matching a board to a fence installed five years earlier can be difficult if the range has changed.

It is not structural in the way timber is. You cannot casually screw a hook, a trellis or a hanging basket bracket into a composite board and expect it to hold, and modifying a system fence is generally not possible.

Installation matters more than the product

Composite systems are engineered kits and they only perform as intended when installed to the manufacturer's specification. Post spacing is fixed and must be accurate — the boards are cut to a specific length and there is no adjustment.

Posts need the same care as any fence: at least 600mm deep in a concrete footing, plumb in two directions, on an accurately set-out line. Metal posts are unforgiving of a post set even slightly out, because the boards will not slot in.

Expansion gaps at board ends are essential and are specified by the manufacturer. Cutting boards tight to the post channel produces bowing in the first hot spell.

Ground clearance and a gravel board detail still matter. Composite does not rot, but soil banked against a fence still exerts pressure, and debris trapped at the base still holds moisture against the posts.

Who it suits

Composite makes most sense on exposed coastal boundaries, on long runs where maintenance access is difficult, for homeowners who do not want to stain a fence every other year, and on contemporary properties where the clean horizontal look suits the architecture.

Timber remains the better choice on period properties, where budget is the priority, where the boundary is short and easily maintained, or where a fence needs to follow uneven ground — composite systems generally step rather than rake.

A pragmatic middle path used by many of our clients is composite on the boundary that matters most — the one in constant view from the house — with good closeboard elsewhere. The visual difference across a garden is minimal, and the cost difference is substantial.
