Establishing a new natural lawn

Turf vs Grass Seed for a New Lawn

Both start with the same work: clearing, cultivating, levelling and firming the ground. That preparation determines the result far more than the choice between turf and seed.

The difference is speed, cost and how much watering you can commit to.

Turf

Turf gives an instant lawn, suppresses weeds immediately and can be laid across a longer season. It is significantly more expensive per square metre and must be laid promptly on arrival.

It needs generous watering for the first weeks or the joins shrink apart.

Seed

Seed costs a fraction as much and lets you choose an exact mix for shade, wear or fine finish. It needs the right sowing window — spring or early autumn — and protection from birds and footfall.

Weeds compete during establishment, and a usable lawn takes months rather than days.

Preparation is the real job

On Essex clay, relieving compaction and getting levels right before laying or sowing matters more than either method. Skipping it produces a poor lawn whichever route you take.

Where the ground is heavily compacted or shaded, it is worth asking whether a lawn is the right surface at all.

Frequently asked questions

When can I walk on a new lawn?

Turf typically needs a few weeks before light use; seed needs considerably longer.

Which gives a better lawn long term?

With good preparation and aftercare, both can be excellent — seed offers more choice of mix.

Can turf be laid in summer?

It can, but watering demand is very high and failures are common in drought.
